In 2009, Kanye West shocked America by interrupting Taylor Swift’ MTV Video Music Awards acceptance speech. This moment lived in viewers conversations for long time before dying down.
West was viewed as a bad person for awhile and definitely had some repairing to do. According to GQ.com, West apologized for the Hennessy-induced incident on The Jay Leno Show, but it didn’t stop the public backlash. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, West’s fifth studio album, would show if he killed his career or if he could get his fan-base back.
His next single after the 2009 VMA’s , “Power”, became a hit. The single was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and certified gold by British Phonographic Industry. According to Jon Dolan of Rolling Stone, it was West’s best single since “Stronger”.
“Monster”, which featured heavy-hitters such as Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Rick Ross and Bon Iver, was his next single. It was certified platinum by the RIAA and gold by the Australian Recording Industry Association.
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was released on Nov. 22, 2010. Despite his negative image the album was a success. According to metacritic.com, the project scores a 94 out of 100. The album sold 496,000 copies in its first week according to Billboard Magazine. The album has sold 1,300,000 to date.
West proved the doubters wrong and clearly built back his fan-base. Luckily for him, his music genius can’t be denied. This major comeback is a moment in music.
